The Michelangelo Antonioni Archive is part of the collections of the Modern and Contemporary Art Galleries of the Municipality of Ferrara. Following the acquisition by the spouses Michelangelo and Enrica Antonioni of the director's personal archive, the municipal administration strove to estabilish a monographic museum as a tribute to the film-maker. In 2006, for reasons of extraordinary maintenance, the museum had to be closed temporarily; at the same time it was decided to integrate the Antonioni Museum within the museum complex of Palazzo Massari which was scheduled for a substantial renovation. The earthquake of May 2012 made it necessary to perform a wider structural consolidation and restoration of the exhibition spaces which is still underway and which will allow, at the reopening, new experiences to the public. In fact, the new Massari Museum will also narrate the human and artistic story of Michelangelo Antonioni through the extraordinary documents of this collection.

An interchangeable design

The complexity of the website derive from the pages that exist around the Archive section, the actual core of the whole project. In order to tackle this problem effectively, we decided to adopt a modular design, which includes flexible blocks to be used based on the content: more or less compact texts, images with or without caption, obviously taking into account the responsive aspect. The structure of headers is a straighforward example — we designed three variants for different sections and depending on the presence of text or background image.

The Michelangelo Antonioni Archive

The collection, formed during the long career of the ferrarese director, includes not only documentation of different nature closely connected to the various stages of the elaboration of his artistic projects, but also volumes that constituted his valuable collection of books, sound discs, sets of photographs and postcards, posters, flyers, works of art (made by Michelangelo Antonioni himself) and personal objects.

The Archive page introduces these fifteen subsections graphically or textually — when browsing this section, the faceted navigation on the left allows the users to browse every single result. The other in-depth sections, curated and thematic collections of specific documents, are also connected to the Archive.
